The Legendary History of
T.G.I. Friday’s®
In the spring of 1965, Alan Stillman, a New York perfume salesman, opened a restaurant located at First Ave and 63rd Street. The restaurant boasted striped awnings, a blue exterior, and yellow supergraphics reading T.G.I.Friday's. Inside were wooden floors covered with sawdust, Tiffany style lamps, bentwood chairs, red and white striped tableclothes, and a bar area complete with brass rails and stained glass.
Friday's was an immediate success. The restaurant on Manhattan's Upper East Side became the meeting place for single adults. In fact, Newsweek and the Saturday Evening Post called the opening of Friday's "the dawn of the singles age." In 1979, the first Dallas Friday's opened, as well as four others around the country. The success was instant, and thus began the company Friday's is today.
Friday's goal has always been to create a comfortable, relaxing environment where guests could enjoy good food and drink. Employees have always been encouraged to display their own personalities and to treat customers as if they were honored guests in their own homes.
As our guests demanded more, Friday's provided more - soon becoming the industry leader in menu and drink selection. Our menu expanded from a slate chalkboard to an award-winning collection of items representing every taste and mood of our guests.
It is now forty years later and today T.G.I.Friday's has over 825 restaurants under the red and white umbrella, in more than 55 countries. Our record is our guests testament that the Friday's experience continues to surpass their expectations!
